Paper and Cup looks like any other
design-focused, on-trend café that serve the Shoreditch area so well. Like
other cafés, it also serves great food and coffee.
What makes it different is that it has
hand-picked books to read, artwork sourced by local artists and to top it all,
hats. Sipping coffee whilst wearing a pink fluffy Stetson definitely improves
your day.
If all that is not enough, this is a café with a heart. A not-for-profit social enterprise created by the
Spitalfields Crypt Trust who support people recovering from addiction and
homelessness. They do this by providing the opportunity to learn new skills -
easing people back into work and life. Paper and Cup, SCT’s charity shops and
their Restoration Station are all staffed by people on this programme.
At SCT’s Restoration Station ex-addicts
learn to restore vintage furniture. It has a great location at 118 Shoreditch
High Street and some wonderful pieces. There is a neat symmetry going on here
that has something to do with taking something that’s going to be discarded and
making it lovely again. Plus, I have been assured that their prices are less
inflated than their for-profit competitors.
A brilliant magazine celebrating SCT’s
50th anniversary is out now
So whether you are visiting one of
their shops, Paper and Cup, or the Restoration Station, it is heartening to
know that you will be doing some good for the wider Shoreditch community.
Finally, did I mention their hot cross buns are delicious…
